Chikanda Safaris & Adventure, led by Director Amos Asajile alongside Tour Guide Godwin Mwambaja, had the privilege of holding a fruitful and forward looking meeting with Bishop Geoffrey Samwel Mwakihaba of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT), Konde Diocese. The engagement provided an important platform to explore the extraordinary historical, religious, cultural and architectural heritage preserved within the Diocese and its surrounding communities.
Central to the discussion was the remarkable legacy of Lutheran Christianity in the region, whose history dates back to 1891. This heritage is reflected not only in the continuity of Christian faith, but also in historic churches, mission stations, schools, hospitals and other sites that have played significant roles in shaping education, healthcare, community development and social transformation across the Southern Highlands. The architecture of these historic places expressed through their masonry, proportions, craftsmanship, materials and distinctive designs stands as a living record of generations of faith, resilience and community identity.
The conversation further explored the untapped potential of faith-based, pilgrimage and heritage tourism within Konde Diocese. Beyond their religious significance, these historic sites offer opportunities to tell powerful stories about missionary journeys, local communities, architectural evolution and the development of the region. Properly documented, preserved and interpreted, they could form a compelling heritage trail capable of attracting pilgrims, researchers, historians, theologians, architects, students, cultural travellers and visitors seeking authentic and meaningful experiences.
For Chikanda Safaris & Adventure, this engagement represents an important step toward connecting tourism with heritage conservation, storytelling and community development. We believe that the Southern Highlands possesses stories and places of exceptional value, and that responsible tourism can help bring these treasures to wider audiences while strengthening appreciation for the history and identity of the communities that have preserved them.
Chikanda Safaris & Adventure sincerely appreciates Bishop Geofrey Mwakihaba and the leadership of ELCT Konde Diocese for the warm reception, and constructive dialogue. We look forward to exploring opportunities for collaboration that can transform Konde’s remarkable heritage into meaningful experiences for visitors while contributing to its preservation for generations to come.
